Just along the shore from Bahía El Aguacate sit two of the most enchanting villages on the Caribbean coast — Capurganá and Sapzurro. There are no roads in, and none within: no cars, no motorcycles, no traffic, no noise. You arrive by boat, and once you do, life moves at the pace of a footpath, a horse cart, or the tide.
Two car-free villagesDos pueblos sin un solo carro ni moto
Capurganá is a picturesque town of dirt streets and colorful wooden houses, where the only ways to get around are on foot, by bicycle, on horseback, or by boat. A short hop away, Sapzurro tucks into a quiet horseshoe cove, its painted houses climbing the green hillsides. From Sapzurro, a scenic jungle trail crosses the border into Panama to reach La Miel — a tiny beach with some of the clearest water you’ll ever wade into.
The beaches & the toursLas playas y los paseos
- Sapzurro & La Miel — a boat to Sapzurro, then a gentle hike over the hill (and the Panama border) to La Miel’s crystal-clear shallows and a fresh, local lunch.
- Playa Soledad — a wide, soft-sand beach reached by boat, often near-empty, fringed by jungle.
- El Aguacate — the sheltered bay itself, calm and reef-rich, perfect for swimming and floating.
- La Piscina de los Dioses (the Pool of the Gods) — a natural rock pool fed by the sea, a short walk through the trees.
- El Cielo Nature Reserve — a jungle trail to waterfalls and pools, alive with birds and butterflies.
- The Sapzurro–Capurganá jungle hike — a rewarding trek through dense rainforest with sweeping coastal views.
Some of Colombia’s best-preserved reefsAlgunos de los arrecifes mejor conservados de Colombia
The same waters that make the bay so calm also make it spectacular below the surface. This stretch of coast holds some of the most well-preserved reefs in the country, with vibrant coral, sea turtles, nurse sharks, rays and clouds of reef fish — world-class snorkeling and diving just minutes from shore. (More on that in our diving & fishing report.)
